Fall Follies for Your Furry Friend

After a humid summer, many welcome fall with open arms-including your pets! When your dog is used to the heat of the summer, he or she will be happy to take walks in cooler weather. Just like there are tips to keep your pets happy and healthy during the summer and winter, there are things to keep in mind during autumn, including access to poisonous objects and different wildlife.

Avoid Poisons

During the fall, homeowners and businesses begin to bring out rat and mouse poisons to prevent these rodents taking shelter in their place of residence. Rodenticides are extremely toxic for your pets, so if you are using them in your home, be extra careful and try to place the poison where your pet cannot reach. In addition to rodenticides, if you are going to change out your car’s engine coolant, use a propylene glycol-based coolant rather than an ethylene glycol-based coolant to keep your pet safe.

Remember to keep school supplies away from your pets-you don’t want to have to bring your dog into the vet emergency room because he or she ate a box of crayons!

Wildlife and Plants

Autumn is a great time to go on lots of walks and enjoy nature. However, if you are bringing your dog along for the walk, it is important to keep two things in mind: snakes and mushrooms. This may seem odd, but fall is both mushroom season and the time where snakes are preparing for hibernation. It can be difficult to distinguish between toxic and non-toxic mushrooms, so the best course of action is to avoid them. As for the snakes, spend some time finding out if there are venomous snakes in your area, and if there are, where they are so you can avoid walking in these areas.

If your pet comes into contact with any of the aforementioned poisons, contact Metro Vet immediately. Keep these tips in mind, and you and your pet will have a great fall!
