Flea FAQ

Fleas are common in dogs, especially those who live in hot climates and spend a lot of time outside. Learn more about the symptoms of fleas and how to treat it should your dog become a victim.

What are fleas?

Fleas thrive in warm and humid environments and feed on the blood of their hosts. While there are almost 2,000 types of fleas, the cat flea is the species found on dogs. They are generally a dark brown or black color and between one and three millimeters long. Cats may also be susceptible to fleas.

What are the signs that my dog has fleas?

Signs include, but are not limited to:

  • “Flea dirt” (droppings) found in a dog’s coat
  • Flea eggs in or near the dog’s environment
  • Excessive scratching, licking or biting at skin
  • Scabs
  • Hair loss
  • Pale gums
  • Tapeworms
  • Allergic dermatitis

Fleas can consume 15 times their own weight in blood, so over time they can cause a significant amount of blood loss in your dog. If you notice one or more of the signs above, consult with your veterinarian right away to diagnose the condition and prescribe treatment.

What treatments are available for fleas?

Your veterinarian will recommend the most effective treatment for your pet’s fleas. The most common include a topical liquid that is applied to the back of the neck, special shampoos, sprays and powders. Over-the-counter versions are available, but prescribed treatments are generally more effective. Never use a product on your dog that is meant for a cat, and vice versa.

Make sure to also clean your home, especially rugs, bedding and upholstered furniture. If the fleas were severe, you may have to use a spray or fogger, which requires you to temporarily evacuate your home.

Are fleas preventable?

Washing your dog’s bedding once a week and regularly using a flea comb can go a long way in preventing fleas. Use an insecticide in your yard, especially in shady areas where fleas tend to occupy.
