Pet Theft Prevention

The American Kennel Club reports that the number of dog thefts is rising. The most horrifying thing that can occur for a pet parent is to have their furry family member to be taken from them. In order to prevent a pet theft, follow these tips:

  • Keep your dog on a leash so he or she doesn’t run off too far.
  • Don’t leave your dog unsupervised out in your yard; this makes them a target.
  • Don’t reveal too much information about where you live or how much your dog costs to others.
  • Even if you lock your doors, don’t leave your pet sitting in the car in a parking lot or on the street. This also puts an animal’s health at risk.
  • Don’t tie your dog up outside a store while you shop; it leaves him or her vulnerable.
  • Make sure your pet is always wearing identification in the event your pet is lost or taken.
  • Keep current photos of the animal, so you are able to make and distribute fliers immediately.

If you suspect your pet was stolen, call the police and animal control office in the area the animal was last seen and file a report. Post a description of your pet in the “stolen article” category on the National Crime Information Center. Canvass the neighborhood and ask people if they have seen your pet. You can also contact the media to put a web post put out about your missing pet.
