Pets are Good for Your Health

Pets are truly a human’s best friend: they listen when we need to talk, cuddle when we’re having a bad day, and wait for us when we come home from work. While our companions bring us happiness in life, they are also good for our health, according to various studies. Keep reading to learn more!

DOG

Dogs are the number one most beneficial pet to own in regards to health. A study in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health in 2011 showed that dog owners are 34% more likely to meet exercise requirements than those who do not own dogs. In fact, there is a link between dog ownership and lower levels of cholesterol and triglyceride, lower blood pressure, and a lower risk for heart disease. Not to mention the mood-boosting benefits of having a dog. Petting a dog releases positive neurochemicals such as dopamine and serotonin.

CATS

Just like dog owners, those who own cats experience lower levels of stress. A study had stockbrokers with high blood pressure choose between adopting a cat or a dog; the results showed that both animals significantly lowered owners’ stress responses. Researchers at the University of Minnesota found that those who had never owned a cat were at a 40% higher risk for death from a heart attack than those who have owned a cat.

FISH

No, you can’t take your fish outside for a game of fetch or have it sit on your lap to pet; however, watching fish swim brings a dose of calm and healthy distraction. Being surrounded by nature improves well-being, and having a fish tank or aquarium in your home allows you to have nature with you at all times. An interesting study: Staring at a fish tank for 20 minutes was as effective at lowering stress as being hypnotized for dental patients about to undergo surgery.

Bring more health and happiness to your life – consider adopting a pet!
