Plants Your Pet Should Avoid

During the summer, it is tempting to have plants all around the house. Even as we inch into fall, it is nice to see greenery in the home and have flowers to brighten up the home. Though this is perfectly fine, if you have pets, make sure that you know which plants are poisonous to them. We all know how curious animals can be, especially cats, so by learning which plants to avoid, you can keep your pet safe.

Flowers

Plants that flower can definitely catch the eye of any animal. Poisonous flowers for pets include the amaryllis, azalea, rhododendron, baby’s breath, buttercups, daffodils, poinsettias, morning glories, mountain laurel, and tulips.

Now, just because your pet has a bite of these leaves, it does not mean they will suffer severe consequences. However, it is still much better for them that they avoid all of the aforementioned plants. Symptoms of eating any of them include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, loss of appetite, seizures, low blood pressure, and even death. Keep them away from every part of the plant, from the leaves to the bulb, if you absolutely have to have them in the home.

Greenery

Aside from flowering plants, there are a couple of plants that may seem harmless to us, but can lead to severe pain for your pet. Tomato plants (the leaves and stems!), holly, mistletoe, and aloe vera are all extremely dangerous to your pet. Many of the same symptoms listed above are potential consequences to your pet ingesting any part of the plant.

As with certain human foods that are harmless to us, there are plants that you should keep your pet away from. If you know you have a very curious pet, maybe just avoid having any of the aforementioned plants in the home. If for any reason your pet has ingested a plant and is having any of the above symptoms, contact your veterinarian right away! Here at Metro Vet, we have a wide array of services and can help your pet recover.
