Signs of Poisoning in Your Pet

Animals are curious, which means they tend to get into things they shouldn’t, like the garbage, the toilet, and your favorite pair of slippers. While these situations are mildly annoying, your pet may also get into hazardous substances found in cleaning supplies and other items you may have around your home. You should keep these items locked up in cabinets where your dog or cat can’t find them; however, keep an eye out for the symptoms of poisoning in your pet. The particular symptoms will depend on the poison that has been ingested.

The following are common signs:

Gastrointestinal Symptoms

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Lack of appetite
  • Excessive drooling

Internal Bleeding

  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Increased heart rate
  • Pale gums
  • Weakness
  • Exhaustion

Kidney Failure

  • Persistent bad breath
  • Lack of appetite
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive urination

Liver Failure

  • Yellow discoloration to the gums (jaundice)
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Low blood sugar
  • Weakness
  • Abnormal behavior
  • Black, tar-like stool
