Are You Ready to Own a Pet?

When you see someone walking his or her dog, or go and visit a friend that has a cat, it can be easy to start wanting a pet. Many want a pet, and it can be extremely tempting to go to a shelter and get a new addition; however, it is not always the best idea, depending on your lifestyle. There are multiple factors to take into consideration when you are looking into owning a pet, from your current lifestyle, your plans in the next ten years or so, and more.

Your Home

Though your living situation is much more of a concern when you have a dog versus a cat, it is still important to think about the amount of room you have for them in your house, condo, apartment, etc. Dogs need to be able to run around, and without a backyard, it may be difficult for them to get the exercise they need. Additionally, if you rent, you will need to think about if your landlord allows dogs or cats, and if there is an extra fee involved.

Your Lifestyle

Think about your normal, every day routine. Are you able to come home to let a dog out? If not, do you have the money to pay for a dog walker? Are you usually home at night during the week? Furthermore, understand your finances and know that you will have to pay for medical expenses, food, toys, etc., which can definitely add up. If you really do want a pet, and you can financially care for him or her, but don’t have as much time as a dog would need, a cat may be the right decision for you.

Your Future

Remember that owning a pet comes with a 10-15 year commitment, assuming you get them at a relatively young age. If you are not ready for that kind of commitment, do not get a pet. You should also take into consideration any major changes that will be happening in your life, such as children, marriage, a significant move, etc. What will you do if a significant other cannot get along with your pet? If you already have children, are you ready to take on that additional responsibility? These are questions that you should think about before getting a pet.

If you have taken these factors into consideration and want a pet and know you can take care of him or her, that is great! Having a pet is extremely rewarding and offers many benefits, so look into shelters near you!
