Make Your Home Safe for a New Pet Cat

Cats are curious creatures; they like to venture into hidden areas of your home and explore. Before you bring your new kitty home, make sure your home will be a safe environment for him or her to play in.

Follow this checklist:

  • Put away and lock up cleaning materials:

Placing childproof locks on cabinets and other storage areas will keep your cat from chewing and licking cleaning products, which contain hazardous chemicals.

  • Don’t leave medications lying around:

A variety of medications that are beneficial to humans can have different effects on animals. Even medications meant for your cat should only be given in certain doses, so keep those out of reach as well.

  • Keep fragile items out of reach:

Cats are sneaky and can find their way just about anywhere. Delicate items that could easily break should be kept somewhere far out of reach or pack them away. Not only could the cat break them, it could also step or chew on the broken pieces.

  • Unplug when you can:

When you are away or not using certain electrical items, unplug them. You can also put a cord protector on the cords to prevent your cat from chewing on them and getting a shock.

  • Check hiding places:

Before starting your washer or dryer, make sure your furry friend didn’t find a way inside. The same goes for refrigerators, freezers, dresser drawers and other small, dark places.

  • Close the toilet lid:

Keep the toilet lid closed. Small kittens can fall in and not be able to get out.

  • Keep the disposal cover on.

Your kitten has probably already jumped on the counter a time or two. Keep the garbage disposal in your sink covered whenever it’s not being used.

  • Keep window screens secure:

Check that the window and door screens are sturdy and in place. You don’t want your cat to be able to slip out.
