Protect Your Dog This Summer!

Dogs, especially those with lots of fur, can become overheated in the summer extremely easily. While your dog wants to enjoy the summer and the dog parks and beaches that come along with the weather, make sure they stay safe and do not overheat. Remember, if you are hot, your dog is likely even hotter! Follow these tips this summer so your dog can enjoy the heat along with you.

Walks

Everyone can agree that summer walks in Chicago are much more pleasant than in the winter! However, there are still precautions you need to take to keep your dog healthy on those warm summer days. For days that are particularly hot, take walks in the morning or at night so that you can take advantage of the cooler parts of the day. Additionally, you will want to avoid walking on hot surfaces, such as asphalt, so your dog’s paws do not burn.

Water and Shade

While on walks, make sure that your pet always has access to fresh water! Bring a water bottle just for them, especially on extremely hot days. While at a dog beach or park, there is usually access to fresh water, but find this out prior to heading to a new one! Shade will also be your dogs’ best friend if outside in a yard or at a dog park; it will help them cool down, particularly when they have a long coat.

Contact Metro Vet

During the summer, you will want to make sure that your pet is protected from mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks, and is as comfortable as possible. For a heartworm preventative, as well as protection from fleas and ticks, contact Metro Vet! We can also give advice on grooming a long coat in the summer, and if your short-haired dog may benefit from sunscreen. Enjoy summer with your dog, and prevent overheating with these tips!
