Protect Your Pet From Springtime Allergies

With spring right around the corner, those suffering from allergies are preparing for stuffiness, and reaching for medication. However, what about pets? Just like humans, our four-legged friends can also suffer from springtime allergies, and experience similar symptoms as we do. Additionally, pets that suffer from allergies need to seek treatment, as their allergies can turn into something worse. With Metro Vet, you have access to great Chicago animal medical care, including allergy testing in our office.

Symptoms

Any human with allergies can tell you that allergies are extremely uncomfortable, even for those with a mild form. During springtime, airborne allergens run rampant, affecting pets that are unable to tell you that they are experiencing symptoms. It is up to you to pay attention and see if you notice any of the following:

  • Runny Nose
  • Chronic itchiness
  • Coughting
  • Watery Eyes
  • Odors coming from the skin and ears
  • Excessive licking, chewing, and rubbing
  • Skin redness or hot spots

If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact Metro Vet for allergy testing, and we can get your pet the right treatment.

Prevention and Treatment

Unfortunately, with airborne allergens, it is difficult to fully prevent your pet from exposure. However, to lessen exposure, always wipe down your pets paws when you return from a walk, and bathe your pet frequently with a mild cleanser. You can also get an air purifier/filter for your home, to reduce indoor exposure. At Metro Vet, we can determine the best treatment plan, whether this includes allergy shots, medicated shampoo, etc. Contact us today for Chicago animal medical care for your pets’ allergies.
