Road Tripping With Your Pet

With Fourth of July weekend right around the corner, you may be taking a road trip! For those with pets, you will have to decide if you want to bring them along or not. Depending on how long you will be gone, particularly if you have a dog, it may be smarter to bring them along! Dog sitting can cost a lot of money, and if you are going somewhere outdoorsy, your dog will enjoy the trip. With a cat, it is easier to leave them, as long as someone can come and check in on them once a day, but you may still want to bring them. Follow these tips to make your pets, and you, as comfortable as possible on a long road trip!

Take Breaks

When driving for a long periods of time, it is always good to take breaks; with pets in the car, it is necessary! Pull over at actual rest stops where your dog can go to the bathroom, and let them run around for a little bit to stretch their legs. Don’t drive for more than eight hours each day, especially if you are the only person in the car.

Pack Smart

Taking a road trip with your pet is a great experience, but you will have to pack a bit smarter. Remember all of your pet travel essentials such as a water bowl, bottled water, an extra leash, extra collar with ID tags, poop bags, a copy of health records, treats, a couple of favorite toys, at least a three day supply of food, and more. Find a carry-on bag that can get dirty, and make that your dog and/or cats “bag” for all of their items.

Safety First

As tempting as it is to drive with your dog on your lap or let your dog stick their head out the window, it is unsafe. Either have their safety harness clipped to a seatbelt in the backseat or utilize pet carriers that are fastened in place if they are a smaller dog or a cat. Purchasing pet insurance will also help just in case anything does happen to your pet while you are on the road. Always keep them hydrated, and stay in pet-friendly hotels!
