City of Chicago Dog Registration Information

Why register your dog with the City of Chicago?

  • It’s the law! Municipal Code 7-12-140 requires all dogs four months and older be registered with the City of Chicago.
  • Helps the City of Chicago locate lost pets.  The person who finds your pet can call 312-744-DOGS with the registration number located on your dog’s tag.
  • Dogs must be registered in order to stay at dog boarding and daycare facilities.
  • Dog registration can fulfill a prerequisite for acquiring permission to enter Chicago Park District dog-friendly areas.

Requirements for Dog Registration:

Dogs must have a current rabies vaccination (available at MetroVet).

License Terms and Expiration:

Your dog’s registration expires on either the registration expiration date (i.e. 1 or 3 years after purchase, depending on the length you purchase) or the expiration date of its current rabies vaccination, whichever comes first. Since rabies vaccinations typically last either one or three years, the clerk’s office offers dog registration in 1-year and 3 year increments.

How much is a dog license?

Sterilized dog (neutered male, spayed female) …………………………………………………………………$5.00

Sterilized dog with a Chicago owner over 65 years old ………………………………………………………..$2.50

Unsterilized dog …………………………………………………………………………………………………… $50.00

Unsterilized dog with a Chicago owner over 65 years old ……………………………………………………..$5.00

Replacement licenses are available at 1/2 the otherwise applicable fee, a maximum of …………………..$20.00

Unsterilized dog fees are higher because thousands of dogs are euthanized annually or suffer as strays because of unwanted, unplanned litters that could have been prevented by spaying or neutering. One unspayed female and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in just six years. Also, sterilized dogs are healthier and have fewer medical problems. In addition, spaying and neutering can make pets less likely to run away or fight with other animals.

How?

You will need your pet’s rabies vaccination information to complete the application and proof of sterilization if applicable. Applications are available at any City Clerk office location, online at chicityclerk.com or you can call 312-744-DOGS (3647) to have an application mailed to you.   Make checks payable to City Clerk. Refer to the dog license chart above to determine the fee. If ordering by mail, it is recommended that you do not send cash.  Also, print your home telephone number on checks or money orders or you can register your dog online @ www.chicityclerk.com.
