Plan Ahead to Keep your Pet Safe

Do you have a natural disaster plan for your family? Make sure you include your pet, too! Whether the emergency is a fire or a severe storm, you should know how to keep your pet safe. Here are some tips to help you prepare for emergencies:

A Disaster Kit

Keep a small bag or container filled in an easy-to-access place in your home that has everything your furry friend would need. This kit should include enough of the following to last about a week:

  • Food and a portable bowl
  • Bottled water
  • Collar, ID tag, and leash
  • Any necessary medications
  • Waste bags, small litter box, and litter
  • A toy
  • Current photos of pets
  • Any important phone numbers

Bedding/Carrier

If you have time to grab your pet’s bed or a blanket in a state of emergency, you should do so. A kennel or carrier is also helpful if you need to contain the animal or must bring him or her to a friend’s or to a shelter. Label the carrier with your name, your pet’s name, your phone number and your veterinarian’s phone number.

Pet-Friendly Shelter or Hotel

Research hotels and shelters that accept pets if you are unable to stay at your home due to a disaster – not all allow animals inside. Keep a list of these places in the disaster kit. This will make it easy to find a place for the whole family if you need to leave.

Phone a Friend

Ask friends nearby if they would be willing to take care of your pet should a disaster occur. This way, if you cannot locate a hotel or shelter that takes animals, you can bring your pet to a place they will be safe.

Your vet may also be able to help board your pet in emergency situations. Don’t wait to figure out an emergency plan until one happens, be prepared! You will lessen the stress and know that everyone is safe – including your pets.
