When Does Your Pet Need Emergency Care?

Did you know that it is possible to train dogs to identify epileptic seizures? Even pet owners who aren’t at risk for seizures experience considerably less stress, and live longer lives than non-pet owners, according to the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association.

Pets help their caretakers live richer, more fulfilled lives. Do the same for your pet, by ensuring that they have the proper veterinary care. How do you know when it is time to take your cat or dog to the vet, or even to an emergency animal hospital?

Regular Veterinary Care

On average, cats sleep for two-thirds of their lives. Cats, especially, can appear low key and self-sufficient, but that does not preclude their need for reliable veterinary care. Most veterinarians suggest that cats and dogs under age 10 need checkups at least once a year. When pets turn 10, they should have biannual visits to vets for complete physical exams. Animals may also need vaccinations and shots upon adoption, and of course all breeds need need to see the vet at the first sign of illness.

Emergency vet services, such as 24 hour animal hospitals, are available days, nights, weekends, and holidays. How do you know when you are dealing with an emergency?

For the most part, warning signs are pretty similar in cats and in dogs. Pets need immediate, emergency care if they have pale gums, rapid breathing, body temperature fluctuations, difficulty breathing, rapid or weak pulses, seizures, or excessive bleeding, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Pets giving birth, with three or four hours between newborns, also need emergency care. Should your pet ingest poisonous foods or toxins, call a vet immediately.

Dogs and cats make you happier, and can even help you live longer. Return the favor, by providing pets with the best possible health care. Take your pet to the vet annually or biannually, depending on its age, and see a 24 hour animal hospital for emergency care.
