Grooming Your Cat

Some cat owners don’t think they need to groom their feline friend, since many cats do this on their own. However, there are some things your kitty can’t do for herself. She may be not so pleased at first, but if you make the following part of the routine, your cat will be looking and feeling her best.

Bathing

Since your cat likely cleans herself daily, you won’t need to do this often; however, if a person in your household is allergic, shampooing her hair regularly will make it more pleasant for the sufferer. There are also special lotions that address this same issue. Do not use your own shampoo on cat hair – use shampoo specifically made for cats. Your veterinarian can recommend the best products.

Brushing and Combing

If your cat has long hair, brush her fur every day; once or twice per week should be sufficient for cats with short hair. This minimizes the amount of shedding and matting, as well as the chance of hairballs. Brush most in the spring when cats commonly shed winter coats. The brush you use should be medium to coarse for the body, and use a fine-tooth comb for the head and face.

Clipping Nails

Outdoor cats need their nails to climb, balance and defend themselves against any predators. Indoor cats can have nails clipped if they start getting too long. Only clip the hook of the nail (any further can cause pain and bleeding), and use professional cat nail clippers. Clip only a few a day, as it may be difficult to get your cat to sit still long enough.

Brushing Teeth

Plaque build-up in your cat’s mouth can lead to tooth decay, gum disease and other oral problems. Find special pet toothbrushes and toothpaste at pet stores, and brush one a week. You can also bring your cat into the vet for a professional teeth cleaning.

Your cat may be picky, but incorporating these grooming techniques into her routine will eventually get easier. She may even learn to like it!
