Dog Ear Infections

You never want to see your dog in pain. However, dogs can be diagnosed with many of the same conditions that humans can, such as diabetes, glaucoma, and ear infections. Ear infections are actually relatively common amongst dogs, as they are often exposed to the bacteria that cause ear infections. Below is a list of ear infections your dog may experience:

  • Bacterial infections

: These infections are actually caused by Staph bacteria. These bacteria can also affect other parts of the dogs’ bodies. The symptoms are typical for any dog ear infection, including odor, consistent scratching, sensitivity, discharge from the ear, swelling, and frequent shaking of the head.

  • Pseudomonas

: This is a group of about 200 types of bacteria, which actually cause ear infections.

  • Proteus Mirabilis

: This type of infection is a bacterial infection, where the bacteria are often found in the intestines rather than the ear, though the ear is common as well.

  • Ear mites

: Though more often found in cats, ear mites could also be found in dogs. They spread rapidly, so early treatment is key. Typically, your veterinarian will have to inspect the discharge from your dogs’ ears in order to tell if he or she has ear mites. Treatment varies, as ear mites are resistant to many types of antibiotics or insecticides.

  • Yeast infections

: If your dog is near water frequently, he or she is more at risk for a yeast infection, as well as if they are long-eared. In addition to regular symptoms, your dog may experience flaking as well. Treatment is often in the form of an antifungal cream.

Fortunately, ear infections are easy to treat. When you see your veterinarian, they will be able to prescribe the correct type of antibiotic, antifungal cream, etc., depending on the type and severity of your dogs’ ear infection. Contact Metro Vet today to schedule an appointment for your pooch!
