Naming Your Pet

Your new pet is going to be a member of your family for a long time, so choosing a name that fits, while satisfying everyone in your family, can be a difficult task. Sometimes it helps to wait a day or so after you bring the animal home so you can get a better idea of his or her personality. Here are a few ideas to help you get started with the naming process.

Find inspiration from famous pets:

Lassie, Benji, Clifford; all famous dogs with memorable names. You can’t go wrong with any of these names, and can always put a twist on them to make them original!

Use other fictional (or real) characters:

Use your favorite book, movie or TV show as a list of potential names for your new friend. You don’t have to only use fictional characters either; you can also name your pet after a real-life person you admire.

Focus on a specific personality trait:

Is your pet particularly feisty? Speedy? Cuddly? Come up with a name that truly matches your pet’s personality. The whole family can get creative in brainstorming ideas.

Pick a name that begins with a hard consonant:

Names that start with a “K,” “M,” “S” or “T” are easier to recognize; your pet (dogs in particular) will pick up these types of names more quickly and more easily in a crowded or noisy area. Make sure not to pick a name that rhymes with or sounds similar to a word used in the animal’s training.

Short and sweet never fails:

Long names can be hard for a pet to learn and remember, which can be frustrating while training. If you do choose a longer name, come up with a shorter nickname for the pet to remember.

Coming up with the perfect name for your pet is essential, as you will be saying it often in the years to come. Once you narrow your list down to a few, practice saying each name several times to your pet and take note of their reaction.
