Pet Proof Your Home

Everyone knows to baby-proof his or her home. However, it can be easy to forget to pet proof your home. Even if your pet is older and not a puppy or kitten, it is important to take steps to make sure your pet stays safe!

In the Kitchen

Certain foods are harmful to pets, such as chocolate, coffee grinds, avocados, and raisins, all of which can easily be left out and found by your dog or cat. In addition to food, keep knives, twist ties, batteries, and other small objects inside a cabinet or drawer. In the event that your pet learns how to open cabinets, childproof latches work great to keep them away from cleaning supplies.

Bathroom Safety

Similar to in the kitchen, there can be harmful chemicals, so it is important to keep those, as well as floss and medication hidden. It may seem cliché, but your pet could easily go for the toilet water, so make sure you close the lid!

Living Room/Bedroom

Though the kitchen and the bathroom may be more hazardous, there are also steps you can take in the bedroom and living room to keep your pet safe. Choking hazards, such as certain office supplies, jewelry, and hair ties, should be put away and hidden. Shoes should always be picked up when there is a puppy in the home, and you may want to cover wires and cables to keep them from being chewed on.

Taking the time to pet proof your home is always a good thing to do, especially if you are bringing home a younger pet. One of the biggest things is just making sure that there are not any choking hazards easily found, as animals are naturally curious.
