Make sure Halloween this year is enjoyable for everyone, including your furry friends. The hustle and bustle of carving pumpkins, dressing up and trick-or-treating can be overwhelming for an animal, so it is important to make sure your pets are safe and comfortable. Here are a few tips:
- DO NOT feed your pet candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (found in most sugar-free candies and gums). If you discover that your pet has ingested candy, take them to the vet as soon as possible.
- If you are handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, chances are your front door will be consistently opening and closing for several hours. Make sure your pet is wearing identification in case they run out the door.
- Keep pumpkins and other decorations involving lit candles out of your pet’s reach.
- Animals in costume are adorable, but make sure your pet is comfortable wearing a costume. Costumes should not restrict movement, breathing or eating, and should not have any parts that can be chewed off.
- Have your pet wear their costume several times before Halloween so they are accustomed to it.
- If your pet is not comfortable around strangers, keep them in another room where they won’t be scared by costumed visitors.
- Keep your pet inside through the evening.
We hope you all have a fun and safe Halloween!
